July 2008. Family of Woodpeckers have been regular visitors to the peanuts. The birds seem to be very hungry this year. There is a lack of flies about, perhaps due to the cold, wet weather.

The Greater spotted Woodpecker.
This unfortunate bird was found dead at Woodhead near a window which it had presumably crashed into.
Here you can see the strong tail feathers which it uses for balance and to support itself when feeding on tree trunks.
Woodpeckers have two toes pointing forward and two back.
Most other birds have three forward and one back.
