History of the Woodhead and Windyhills Area

- Woodhead of Fetterletter.
- A Burgh of Barony, created in 1685 erected in favour of Gordon of Gight. [Scottish Archives network Gazetteer.
- Prior to 1920 the woods at Woodhead and Windyhills were owned by The Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair, part of Haddo House estate.
- 1920 The lands were purchased by Robert Paterson, Balquholly, Turriff. Inherited by his son George Paterson. 1949.
- 1953 Planning permission was granted by Aberdeenshire Council for quarrying the gravels.
- 1967 Bought by Davidsons [Contractors] Ltd. Sheilhill, Bridge of Don.
- 1977 John Fyfe Ltd applied for permission to extract gravels.
- 1980 Purchased by Wimpey Asphalt Ltd.
- 1986 Area designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest [Geology]
- 1999 Tarmac Heavy Building Products UK Limited applied to Aberdeenshire Council for the determination of conditions for minerals extraction in accordance with Section 96 of the Environment Act 1995.
- 2000 Local action group formed to protest against quarrying.
- 2003 Land purchased by Woodhead & Windyhills Community Trust Ltd. 2003 Quarrying permission rescinded for all time.
- 2003 Green butterfly award received.
- 2004 26th Oct. The website www.windyhills.org was launched.
- 2005 5th Sept. The natural history library commenced.
- 2006 June. Additional 10 acres of land purchased.
- 2006 Woodhead - Runners-up in Village in Bloom competition.
- 2006 Commended in National Calor Gas Awards, for Web-site
- 2007. Botanical survey by Ian Green.
- 2007. Visitor safety plan.
- 2007 Commended in Scotlands Finest Woodlands competition
- 2007 Woodhead, Winner of Village in Bloom Competition in Formartine area.
